As we all know that the Buddhism is the compilation of all the teachings of Gautam Buddha. which consists four Nobel truth that is the truth of suffering, the truth of the cause of suffering, the truth of the end of suffering, and the truth of the path that leads to the end of suffering and eight fold paths which is a path to "nirvana". But do we all the real meaning of buddha? the real term that specifies the term buddha is "enlighten one". The person who receive the enlightment is called Buddha. Most of us see Buddhism as a religion but taking this subject to consideration Buddhism is more than the religion, taking all the teachings and applied to real life is far better than treating this only as a religion.
Buddha choose a middle path for his teaching, we can adapt these teachings to our practical life it doesn't signifies that we transform ourselves to bhikkhus or we choose Buddhism instead Hinduism . It means to implement all the teachings to our practical life. There are instance in history of Buddhism that many emperors choose the path of Buddhism or you can say that they embrace the teachings of buddha in their life adjacent to their reign. similarly, we all can designate these teachings. In 260 BCE, King Ashoka adopted Buddhism after a violent war against the feudal state of Kalinga. He wanted to renounce violence and publicly turned to Buddhism in order to achieve this. Buddhist texts such as Jatakas reveal socio-economic conditions of Mauryan period while Buddhist chronicles Mahavamsa and Dipavamsa throws light on the role of Ashoka in spreading Buddhism to Sri Lanka. Divyavadam, the Tibetan Buddhist text informs us about Ashoka's efforts in spreading Buddhism. After the Ashok the torch of Buddhism was kept burning by the efforts of Milinda(manander) the Indo-Greek king, he figures as one of the character in pali book (Milind-panha), Kanishka comes after Milinda and complete the work of Ashoka and helped in the triumphant spread in Buddha-dharma throughout Asia , Harsa was responsible reminds of one Ashoka. he probhibited the slaying of the any living creature of food and during his reign visit of the chinese pilgrim, Yuan Chwang to India.this was the most remarkable event of his life. And the rulers of the Pala dynasty(750-1150 A.D).
As you see that how such enormous emperors devoted towards Buddhism because they didn't see Buddhism as a religion only they had insight of such a great teachings of Buddha.
